Over the winter I was starting to feel burnt out! The last few years have been a wild ride. It seemed like the world just wanted to keep tossing things out at a rapid speed and say keep up. In an effort to keep up with changing technology and what was now expected from businesses in this new world, I started to lose myself.
Usually, when I would start to feel lost it just meant I needed a refocus on what type of photography I was doing. A genre switch so to speak. But I know I am in the genre that was meant for me. Nothing sparks creativity like a personal project. So in an attempt to get my head back in the game, I started a personal project. However, it just wasn't enough. I felt I needed something that wasn't work related. I decided to look into volunteer work.
For the last few months I have been spending a couple of mornings a week out in Morinville at the Second Chance Animal Rescue facility. No, I am not there doing photography. I spend my mornings there doing a variety of tasks. Somedays I walk dogs or cuddle cats and other days I clean and do laundry. None of it relates to my business. Honestly, I wouldn't of thought stepping away from my craft would be what helps me refocus and feel creative. The experience brings so much joy. I love seeing those happy faces on the dogs when we go for a walk and hearing the purr of the cats that are happy to be warm and loved.
If you are feeling like you need something different to take care of yourself and to make a difference, look outside of your business or career skill set. Check out the volunteer opportunities in your community. I know the greater Edmonton area pets would love to see you.
