My photographic roots go back to the days of film. Back then, learning the art of photography felt magical. You had to find just the right light to evoke the mood you wanted. You exposed the film carefully, sometimes with a little trepidation, and then anxiously waited in the darkroom, watching as the images slowly revealed themselves in the swirling chemistry. That moment always brought excited butterflies. It was a truly magical experience.
Fast forward a quarter of a century, and while I still love creating images for my clients, I feel like some of that magic has been lost. The digital world is vastly different from the tactile, hands-on process of the darkroom. Lately, I have been feeling nostalgic and looking for ways to bring a little of that magic back, without the harsh chemicals.
I have found that magic again with a modern twist on an old technique. The Polaroid emulsion lift or image transfer is not new. It dates back decades. I first experimented with it in photography school, but today I am revisiting it with a fresh approach. While the process remains nearly the same, the images I now transfer come from my professional digital camera and area exposed to a traditional Polaroid via my phone and the Polaroid Lab. This allows me to create finished pieces with greater control over quality while still embracing the handmade artistry of the past. It is a unique offering for my clients, one that blends nostalgia with innovation. A little of the physical magic has returned!
